Sitting on 1.37 acres bought from John H Gray, this 10,280 sq ft home was built by a prolific local banker, Edward A Smith, for his wife Ellen M. (Sprauge) Smith and named Hillendale. Edward was instrumental to the growth and development of Morrison by helping to: bring Libby, McNeill and Libbey companies, organize the first electric light company in Morrison, and bring Lincoln Highway to Morrison. During his lifetime E.A Smith remodeled the home 5 times with multiple additions and the building of the tea house and the ponds around 1918 and updating the exterior style from a Queen Anne to the current Tudor style with stucco and half timbering. The home was sold after his death in 1957 to George and Hazel Jones who converted the home into seven apartments, reconfiguring the main stairway to directly access the second and third floors. The home was then bought by Harry and Orvilla Watt in 1962 who continued to rent the home as apartments. In 1989 Mike & Barb Winandy restored much of the home to be the Hillandale Bed & Breakfast opening in 1991. After the Bed & Breakfast closed its doors, Ludens and Potter Law Office bought the property in 2009 and now it is ready for a new era with a new owner to bring new life into this historic home.
